Luke, Darrell Bock. 2 volumes (ISBN 0-8010-1052-7 and 0-8010-1051-9)

These two volumes were the flagship release of Baker Book House's BECNT (Baker Exegetical Commentaries on the New Testament) series of commentaries. The series was specifically designed to be accessible and user friendly, something missing in most commentaries. Features include gray sections for a quick overview, verse numbers in the outer margin, legible typography, and page headers containing the pericope being discussed and the chapter title.

I am especially proud of this project. A group of designers, editors, and writers spent several months looking at other commentaries and discussing how we could best design a new series using the latest technology. This project was designed using Adobe FrameMaker; the maps were generated in Macromedia FreeHand.

Bibliotheca Sacra, the journal of Dallas Theological Seminary, notes,

This two-volume set on the Gospel of Luke has much to offer in this respect [features that differentiate it from preceding commentaries]. Its format could be regarded as innovative and indeed a model for future works of this type. Major attention has been given to the usefulness of page layout, taking advantage of recent developments in electronic typesetting and publication. This includes the use of marginal verse references in the detailed exegetical discussions and shaded boxes to draw the reader's attention to certain key issues. This last feature is especially helpful for nonspecialists who may not be familiar with such issues and who would no know where to look for such summaries in a volume laid out in traditional fashion.
